The emitter is the transmitting part of the Xtralis OSID beam smoke detector: it is mounted on the wall opposite the imager (OSI-10 or OSI-90) and sends the imager a sequence of ultraviolet and infrared pulses synchronised with it, so other light sources are rejected. The emitter's optical sphere is turned towards the imager with the laser alignment tool; as the imager finds and tracks the emitter itself, approximate alignment is enough. The high power emitter extends the detection range: 100–200 m with the OSI-10 imager, about twice the standard range with the OSI-90. The wired emitter is powered from a 20–30 V DC supply, convenient where 24 V power is close by.
